London: US Open champion Andy Murray wants to win the Australian Open trophy next Sunday to raise the spirits of his friend Ross Hutchins.
The Scot’s Davis Cup team-mate was diagnosed with cancer last month and started chemotherapy.
A tearful Murray dedicated his victory at the Brisbane International earlier this month to the 27-year-old Hutchins, the Mirror reports.
After reaching the fourth round without dropping a set by beating Ricardas Berankis, the British No 1 said he had a double motivation to win back-to-back Grand Slams.
Murray said that he spoke to him most days and will continue to fight as hard as he can this week to give him something to support and smile about.
He added that Hutchins is one of his closest friends. He’s going through a tough time just now and needs all the support he can get, the report added.
