Nainital Election Results: BJP's Sanjeev Arya wins

Dehradun: Nainital, which is usually talked about for being one of the top tourist destinations, is witnessing an unusual political heat this winter.

The usually quiet assembly constituency made much news in politics after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) named Sanjeev Arya as party candidate from the seat. 

Sanjeev was awarded the ticket within four hours after he and his father Yashpal Arya joined the BJP. He is the richest candidate to contest from the Nainital assembly constituency.

Sanjeev's father Yashpal Arya served as a Cabinet minister in Harish Rawat government. He, however, switched over to the saffron party after Congress reportedly cited its 'One Family One Ticket' rule.

Uttarakhand, where most seats witnessed a bipolar fight between Congress and BJP, Nainital has seen representation by the two national parties and also by the UKD, the only regional party in the state.

In 2002, UKD's Narayan Singh Jantwal had won the polls defeating Congress' Jaya Bisht. He, however, lost the seat to BJP's Kharak Singh Bohara in the 2007 polls. 

In 2012, the constituency was declared reserved for scheduled castes. Congress' Sarita Arya bagged the seat defeating BJP's Hem Chandra Arya.

51-year-old Hem Chandra Arya, BJP's official candidate in 2012 assembly polls, contested as an independent candidate this year. 

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)'s Sunder Lal Arya is contesting from the party ticket.
