Senate of Serampore University, West Bengal (1818)

It is India’s first institute to be granted the status to be known as a university and also the oldest. Serampore College is the oldest university in India to be in continuous operation.

University of Calcutta, West Bengal (1857)

The University of Calcutta holds the second rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. It is recognized as a “Five-Star University” in India and has been accredited “A” Grade by NAAC.

University of Mumbai, Maharashtra (1857)

The University of Mumbai has the third rank in 10 oldest universities in India. It is one of the largest universities in the world and one of the major universities in India.

University of Madras, Tamil Nadu (1857)

The University of Madras holds the fourth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. This university has been given ‘five-star’ accreditation from NAAC.

Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh (1875)

AMU has the fifth rank among the 10 oldest universities in India. In 1877, the school was upgraded to the college level and the foundation stone of the college building was laid by Lord Lytton.

Panjab University, Chandigarh (1882)

Panjab University holds the sixth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. It also has 188 colleges under its affiliation spread over the eight districts of Punjab and Chandigarh.

Allahabad University, Uttar Pradesh (1887)

Allahabad University has the seventh rank in 10 oldest universities in India. This premier institute covers courses from various fields such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, and Medicine.

Banaras Hindu University, Uttar Pradesh (1916)

: Banaras Hindu University holds the eighth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. It is honored with the title of the largest residential university in Asia.

The University of Mysore has the ninth rank in 10 oldest universities in India. It holds around 122 colleges under its affiliation.

Patna University, Bihar (1917)

Patna University holds the tenth rank amongst the 10 oldest universities in India. It also includes over 5000 valuable old rare manuscripts; mostly used by research scholars.
