While regular dental hygiene practices such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups contribute to your teeth’s health, what you eat also plays a vital role here. Without further ado, here are ten foods that promote strong teeth. Ankit Agarwal, Co-Founder of Fang, an Oral Care brand shares his inputs.
Chewing sugarless gum, especially one sweetened with xylitol, can stimulate saliva production, neutralize acids, and wash away debris, reducing the risk of cavities.
Staying hydrated with water is essential for overall health, including oral health. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria, maintains saliva production, and prevents dry mouth, which can contribute to tooth decay.
Cranberries contain polyphenols that may help prevent plaque formation on teeth, reducing the risk of cavities. However, be mindful of consuming cranberry products with added sugars, as these can counteract the positive effects on oral health.
Green and black teas contain natural compounds called polyphenols that can help suppress the growth of bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. Additionally, tea contains fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel.
Oranges and grapefruits are high in vitamin C, which is essential for maintaining healthy gums. “However, it's important to consume these fruits in moderation, as their acidic nature can erode tooth enamel over time,” says Ankit.
Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help prevent gum disease. The vitamin D found in fish also aids in the absorption of calcium, promoting strong teeth.
Apples, carrots, and celery are examples of crunchy fruits and vegetables that promote strong teeth. Their firm texture helps remove food particles and plaque from the teeth's surface while providing vitamins and minerals that contribute to overall oral health.
Almonds, walnuts, and sesame seeds are packed with calcium, phosphorus and healthy fats. Ankit adds, “In fact, chewing nuts also stimulates saliva production, helping to neutralize acid and prevent plaque buildup.”
Leafy greens such as spinach and kale are also rich in vitamins and minerals, including calcium, which support tooth enamel and gum health. Additionally, their high fibre content stimulates saliva production, aiding in the natural cleansing process of the mouth.
Milk, cheese, and yoghurt are rich sources of calcium and phosphorus that strengthen tooth enamel and protect against tooth decay. “The probiotics found in yoghurt can also contribute to a healthier balance of good bacteria in the mouth,” says Ankit Agarwal, Co-Founder of Fang, an evidence-based, preventive oral care brand.
