7 Types of Sexually Transmitted Disease

Trichomoniasis

This is caused by a parasite and is one of the most common curable STDs. It often presents minimal or no symptoms but can cause irritation, discomfort, and discharge.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection and includes many different viruses, some of which can lead to genital warts or certain types of cancer, such as cervical cancer.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

There are two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes, which results in cold sores, while HSV-2 usually results in genital herpes, causing sores around the genital and anal areas.

Syphilis

Caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, syphilis progresses through multiple stages, each with distinct symptoms.

Gonorrhea

Another bacterial infection, gonorrhea affects the genitals, throat, and rectum. It can cause infections in the urethra, cervix, and pelvic area, and it often occurs alongside chlamydia.

Chlamydia

Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, this STD often presents no symptoms, making it hard to diagnose without testing.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

HIV attacks the immune system, reducing its ability to fight off other diseases and infections.
