Captain Vikram Batra

The hero of the Kargil war is Captain Vikram Batra of the 13 J&K Rifles. He helped to retake Peak 5140, Though Batra was critically hurt on this mission, still he fought three enemy soldiers and killed them.

Major General Ian Cardozo

He will always be remembered for his extraordinary bravery in the 1971 war with Pakistan. He was a young major at the time serving with the 5 Gorkha Rifles. He tripped on a landmine during the conflict, seriously wounding his leg.

Brigadier Mohammad Usman

Brigadier Usman, who repelled a furious onslaught on Naushera and Jhangar, two extremely crucial areas in Jammu and Kashmir, during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1947–1948, earned the nickname "The Lion of Naushera" from his fellow soldiers.

Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav

He volunteered to take control of three vital bunkers on Tiger Hill. Three bullets entered Yadav's body through his shoulder and crotch. Yadav, despite being in excruciating pain, crawled to the opposing bunker and threw a grenade, which killed four Pakistani soldiers and halted the enemy fire.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat

The only soldier in the history of the Indian Army to advance through the ranks after his death is Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles Infantry Regiment. Forty years after his passing, he was 'raised' to the rank of Major General.

Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal

Another gallant soldier who lost his life too soon at the age of 21 was Arun Khetarpal of the 17 Poona Horse regiment. During the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, he was killed in the Battle of Basantar, where his valiant deeds won him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

Major Somnath Sharma

This courageous Fourth Kumaon Regiment soldier gave his life at the tender age of 24. On October 30, 1947, Sharma's unit was airlifted to Srinagar to fight Pakistani invaders, despite the fact that Sharma's hand was already plaster due to an injury incurred during a hockey match. Sharma insisted on fighting with his company.

Naik Jadu Nath Singh

His foresight and valor prevented the enemy from attacking his station not once, but three times. Singh oversaw a forward station at Taindhar on the key day of February 6, 1948. The position was occupied by nine men.

Subedar Karam Singh

Even when the enemy came quite near, he resisted leaving the station. Karam Singh jumped out of his bunker as enemy soldiers came nearer and fatally stabbed two intrusives. His valiant deed so greatly weakened the enemy's confidence that they abandoned the attack.

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran

A militant shot him in the chest during the hand-to-hand conflict. Major Parameswaran took the militant's rifle and shot him to death. He was now barely able to stand, yet he continued to give his men orders and encouraged them to fight to the very end.
