Kedarnath is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Hindus. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.
The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the main attraction in the town. It is believed to have been constructed over a thousand years ago by Adi Shankaracharya, a great Hindu philosopher.
The temple is situated at an elevation of approximately 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Garhwal Himalayan range near the headwaters of the Mandakini River. The breathtaking natural surroundings of Kedarnath add to its appeal.

In 2013, Kedarnath faced severe devastation due to flash floods caused by heavy rainfall. The town and the temple suffered significant damage. Since then, extensive efforts have been made to restore and rebuild the area.
Near the Kedarnath Temple, there is a small temple dedicated to Bhairavnath, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Bhairavnath protects the area during the winter when Kedarnath remains inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
The Mandakini River, originating from the Chorabari Glacier near Kedarnath, flows through the town. It adds to the scenic beauty of the area and holds religious significance for devotees who take a dip in its holy waters.
Kedarnath is one of the four sacred sites of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. The other three sites are Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath. Devotees undertake this pilgrimage to seek spiritual blessings.
: Due to extreme weather conditions, Kedarnath remains closed to visitors during the winter months, usually from November to April. The idol of Lord Kedarnath is taken to Ukhimath, where it is worshipped during this period.
