February 2024 Honors

In February 2024, Kapoori Thakur and L.K. Advani were awarded the Bharat Ratna, bringing the total recipients to 53. Out of which only 5 awards have been secured by women till now.

1. Indira Gandhi

India's first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1971 for her leadership and efforts during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.

2. Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa received the Bharat Ratna in 1980 for her humanitarian work, serving the poor and sick in India with selfless dedication.

3. Aruna Asaf Ali

Aruna Asaf Ali, a prominent freedom fighter, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997 for her role in the Indian independence movement.

4. M.S. Subbulakshmi

M.S. Subbulakshmi, the renowned Carnatic singer, was honored with the Bharat Ratna in 1998 for her contributions to Indian classical music.

5. Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary playback singer, was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001 for her exceptional contribution to Indian music over seven decades.
