Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888 in Madras. His birthday is celebrated as Teacher’s Day.
He completed his Masters in Philosophy and became a Teacher in universities such as University of Calcutta and Oxford University.
He was born to Sarvepalli Veeraswami and Sitamma. He married Sivakamu and had 6 children.
He became the Vice-President of India in 1952 and The Second President of India in 1962.
The teachers hold an important place in student’s life and are honoured, so it was suggested by Dr. Radhakrishnan to celebrate his Birthday as Teacher’s Day.
He was a Vice-Chancellor at Andhra University (1931-1936), Banaras Hindu University (1939-1948) and Chancellor of Delhi University (1953-1962).
He was awarded with the Highest Civilian Award, Bharat Ratna in 1954 and got Honorary Membership of British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
