An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck the Hindu Kush area of Afghanistan on Tuesday night, sending strong tremors jolting parts of north India, including Delhi-NCR.
People fled from buildings in a panic as the earthquake, which was felt in Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan as well, hit at 10:20 p.m.
According to a senior seismologist, the fault was "more than 150 km" deep, which is why people in Delhi and northwest India felt the tremors for a comparatively extended period of time.
The origin of the earthquake, with a focal depth of 156 km, was located 133 km south-southeast of Fayzabad in Afghanistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
An official reported that some areas of the Jammu region experienced mobile service interruptions shortly following the earthquake.
