This beautiful village is located in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya with alluring hills and greenery.
Konthong is a ‘whistling village’ of India where they have a unique tradition of calling each other’s name with a melody, the melody which is assigned to them at their birth by their mothers.
They have a very unique form of communication which is passed down to them through their generations. People call each other by whistling and humming.
Their primary mode of calling each other is a melody which is called "Jingrwai Iawbei", a melody allotted to each person.
It is a small village with a population of over only 700 - 800 people.
The Village has been nominated for a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List for its unique heritage and culture.
The people of the village have preserved their tradition with respect of calling each other with tunes over the ages which was given to them by their ancestors.
