In June, 1975, the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi advised President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed to declare an emergency in India.
The emergency lasted until March 21, 1977, for a period of 21 months.

The declaration led to the massive protests by opposition leaders. The Government, in response, arrested the protesters.
Indira Gandhi’s son Sanjay Gandhi took the central stage during the emergency and played an important role in the imposition of the emergency.
Non-Congress state governments were sacked and the constitution was amended many times.
In 1977, Morarji Desai led Janata alliance formed the government by registering a landslide victory in Elections.
