PM Narendra Modi on Sunday installed the historic 'sengol' in the new Parliament building.
The 'sengol' is a Chola-era spectre and is made of silver with a coat of gold.
'Sengol' was a traditional Chola practice for Samayacharyas (spiritual leaders) to lead coronation of kings and sanctify transfer of power.
'Sengol' is a symbol of transfer of power from the Britishers to India in 1947. It was received by first PM Jawaharlal Nehru.
The length of the 'sengol' is approximately 138.4 centimetres.
Sengol is a Tamil word for sceptre. It is derived from the Tamil word 'Semmai' and means 'righteousness'.
