Non-Vegetarian Dishes

Meat dishes are avoided as a mark of respect and devotion for Lord Shiva. Also, the monsoon season coincides with Sawan and animal breeding is believed to be less hygienic and safe.

Onion and Garlic

These vegetables are considered tamasic in Ayurvedic which means it can increase ignorance, lethargy and negative emotions and Sawan is believed to be a pure, spiritual month.

Alcohol

This drink is strictly avoided in Sawan as it is considered impure and believed to harm self-discipline and devotion practices.

Fermented Food

The fermented food is believed to create imbalance in the body's energy levels hence, should be avoided.

Spicy and Oily Foods

Spice-oily food can lead to indigestion and other health issues especially during monsoon season.

Caffeinated Beverages

Beverages high in caffeine can disturb sleep hence effect meditation and other practices during Sawan.

Leafy Green Vegetables

Though green vegetables are high in nutrition but can be unsafe during monsoon as increased risk of contamination and pesticides.

Lentils and Pulses

They can produce excessive heat in the body just opposite of what devotees want during Sawan.
