A recent study by Toxics Link found microplastics in tested Indian salt and sugar brands.
Microplastics were found in various forms: fibers, pellets, films, and fragments. It sizes from 0.1 mm to 5 mm.
Iodized salt had the highest levels of microplastics.
Study found organic rock salt had the least concentration. Sugar also contained microplastics, mainly in the form of fibers.
There is some concern that microplastics may disrupt hormones, damage organs, and increase the risk of chronic diseases.
The presence of microplastics in essential food items like salt and sugar is alarming. Urgent action is needed to reduce microplastic contamination in the food chain.
