The classic South Indian Red Chutney Recipe (Onion and Tomato Chutney) is quite easy to make. This chutney recipe is pleasantly sweet and spicy and an excellent accomplishment for Idli, Dosa, Utappam and several other snacks.
1. Chop the onions and tomatoes and set them aside in a bowl.
2. Heat oil in a pan and add the chopped onions. Fry till light golden brown and soft.
3. Add the garlic and red chilies and cook until the garlic loses its raw fragrance.
4. Add the chopped tomato, curry leaves, and salt. Stir thoroughly and cook until the tomatoes turn soft.
5. Grind the mixture to a smooth paste in a grinder without adding water.
6. Heat oil in a tempering pan and add split black gram and mustard seeds.
7. Pour the tadka on the red chutney and it's ready to be savored with South Indian delicacies of Idli, Dosa, Utappam and several other snacks.
