The highest civilian honour in India, the Bharat Ratna, was given to her in 2001. She also earned the Padma Bhushan in 1969 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
She sung almost 5,000 songs, earning her the distinction of most recorded artist in Indian music history in 1974 and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
1974 also saw her make her Royal Albert Hall debut as the first Indian performer in London.
She was granted Honorary Citizenship of the United States of America, Houston, Texas, in 1987, and Honorary Citizenship of the Republic of Suriname, South Africa, in 1980.
Asia Day was established on June 9th, 1985, in observance of Lata Mangeshkar's arrival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
She received France's highest civilian honour, the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
Her One Time Award for Lifetime Achievement was given to her in 2008 in honour of India's 60th anniversary of independence.
In September 2019, she turned 90 years old, and the Indian government awarded her with the Daughter of the Nation award.
