1. National Savings Certificate

These investment options last for five years. You need to put in at least Rs 1,000. Right now, they give an interest rate of 7.7 percent.

2. Public Provident Fund

This popular option gives an interest rate of 7.1 percent. You can start with just Rs 500 as your first investment in a year, but you can't invest more than Rs 1.5 lakh.

3. Sukanya Samriddhi Account

This scheme offers the highest interest rate among similar savings options, at 8.2 percent per year. You can begin investing with just Rs 250, but you can't deposit more than Rs 1.5 lakh.

4. Senior Citizens Savings Scheme

People who are 60 years old or older can put their money into this scheme. Once you invest, you can't take it out for five years. You need to put in at least Rs 1,000, but you can deposit up to Rs 30 lakh.

5. 5 Year Time Deposits

The national savings time deposits have different durations: one, two, three, and five years. Only the five-year deposit qualifies for deductions under section 80C. You need to deposit at least Rs 1,000.
