First Train

The first train in India (and Asia) operated on April 16, 1853.

First Train Engine

The maiden service was hauled by 3 engines, named `Sahib,` `Sindh,` and `Sultan'.

First Passenger Train

The first passenger train started in the east on August 15, 1854.

Over the past 170 years, the Indian Railways has mushroomed into a multi-gauge network.

It is the second biggest network in the world, with over 108,000 km of running lines.

Railways currently operate Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Tejas, elite tourist specials (Palace on Wheels), unique toy trains or hill-trains, and the most recent addition of Vande Bharat trains.
