William S. Gaud of the US Agency of Aid and Development coined the phrase “Green Revolution” for the first time in 1968.
The International Rice Research Institute in 1968 created the IR8 “miracle rice” , a high-yielding rice variety which increased the production of rice from 3.7 to 7.7 million tons in 20 years’ time.
The green revolution’s overarching “Krishonnati Yojana” scheme was introduced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the 12th five year plan from 2017 to 2020.
The “Krishonnati Yojana” consists of 11 distinct programmes pertaining to various agricultural areas.
India became one of the largest exporters of food grains and achieved self-sufficiency as a result of the green revolution.
One of the few African nations to successfully implement the green revolution programme is Guinea.
Norman Borlaug started the Green Revolution movement in the 1960s. He is referred to as the “Father of the Green Revolution” globally, whereas in India Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan is considered as the father of Indian Green Revolution.
