Kolkata: Two people were killed when a portion of an almost century-old building collapsed in central Kolkata's Taltala on Tuesday.

The building collapsed due to incessant rains in the city for the last few days.

Residents managed to rush out of the 10 Mirror Street building in central Taltala area when the collapse happened around 12.45 pm, a police official said.

Few persons are still feared trapped under the debris.

Fire engines, ambulances, personnel from Disaster Management units and local police have been deployed for the search and rescue operation.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

While speaking to the media, Chatterjee said that the residential building, which collapsed was being used as a godown.

An officer from Taltala Police Station said, "The rescue operation is on. However, how many people are trapped in the wreckage is still not certain."
