Military captures 30 rebels in Indian nightmare district in Fiji
Fiji`s military said on Thursday it had captured 30 rebels who allegedly terrorised ethnic Indian families in the remote Dreketi valley on the northern island of Vanua Levu.
Speight must appear before the magistrate's court on Saturday.
The court is still dealing with the last 40 of Speight's nationalist rebels arrested last week on a variety of charges, including a church minister charged with detaining a member of the traditional Great Council of Chiefs (GCC).
A local shopkeeper who requested not to be named told AFP the military arrived at an irrigation works seized by rebels. “I heard about 15 to 20 shots being fired,” he said.
“They (the military) came in, they appeared to be very angry, they just went in there and started shooting. Then they just loaded these people into a lorry and took them away. He said that the rebels appeared to have been beaten up.” The Dreketi area has become infamous for its lawlessness and attacks on Indian farmers. Report: Zeenext Bureau
