Dense fog on Friday again blinded North India throwing road, rail and air traffic into disarray as unabated cold wave claimed seven more lives in Uttar Pradesh pushing the state-wide toll to 79.
Thick fog and mist disrupted normal life in Uttar Pradesh where four people died overnight in Ballia, two each in Kanpur and Ghazipur and one in Shahjahanpur due to biting cold.
In Bareilly, the mercury plummeted to near freezing point while Lucknow shivered under 2.5 degree celsius as met office said more colder days were ahead.
Flights operations at the Delhi Airport were affected and road traffic moved at snail's pace as a thick blanket of fog enveloped the national capital reducing visibility considerably.
There were no flight operations between 0600 hours and 0852 hours, Airports Authority of India said in, adding the runway visibility range was reduced to a mere 300 metres at around 0730 hours.
“The first domestic flight took off for Mumbai at 0852 hours,” it said.
Cold wave sweeping Himachal Pradesh further aggravated with higher hills receiving another spell of snow. Mercury hovered between minus 16 degrees and minus 24 degrees celsius in twin valleys of Lahaul and Spiti.
Ponds, lakes, rivulets and rivers in high altitude areas remained frozen as Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda reeled under sub-zero temperature. Mercury too dipped sharply in Shimla which was lashed by high-velocity icy winds.
