Jointly produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment, the film featured SRK essaying the role of a bootlegger in a story set in the backdrop of liquor prohibition in Gujarat.
After becoming the film to collect highest revenues on the Republic Day holiday, Raees also become SRK's 7th film to enter Rs 100-crore club. Interestingly, it clashed with Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil at the Box Office. The makers of Raees had initially decided to release the film on Eid in 2016, the same day as Salman Khan starrer Sultan was set to hit the silver. To avoid a clash and for various other reasons, Raees makers decided to postpone the release of the film.
For the unversed, Raees was banned in Pakistan. Sources in the know said the reason behind the ban was that "the content undermines Islam, and a specific religious sect, (It also) portrays Muslims as criminals, wanted persons and terrorists".
Most members objected to the film's release, an official of the Punjab (Pakistani side of Punjab) censor board said, adding that they will follow the decision of the central censor board.
Raees released in India on January 25 and also starred method actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Atul Kulkarni and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
