Mumbai: The Khan trinity of Bollywood – Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, all in their early 50s have ruled the roost for over two-and-a-half-decades. They have their own set of fan following quite distinct and dedicated.
Aamir’s Dangal (2016) has made Indian film fraternity proud abroad. The film based on wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters – Geeta and Babita – has created waves at the international Box Office. The ‘Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood’ is busy shooting for Thugs of Hindostan and looking forward to the release of his home production – Secret Superstar.
Salman had Tubelight and SRK had Raees and Jab Harry Met Sejal this year. Despite being big budget films that audiences were anticipating, the Tubelight and Jab Harry Met Sejal tanked at the Box Office.
Prior to Dangal, Aamir experimented with a variety of roles to ditch the typical Bollywood hero image. He played an alien in PK, a magician/robber in Dhoom 3, a police officer in Talaash. For Dangal, Aamir underwent jaw-dropping transformation by gaining over 40 kilos to justify his look as an aged Mahavir.
Though Salman and Shah Rukh too have tried to make little experiments, they haven’t been able to leave an indelible mark. Salman’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, however, was an exception and so was SRK’s Dear Zindagi.
Perhaps both Salman and SRK should widen their horizons and choose roles that not just suit their age but also that help them display their depth as actors.
Aamir has picked his scripts with maturity and hasn’t shied from taking a backseat to making other characters in his film look equally important. Salman has Tiger Zinda Hai slated to release in December while SRK has Aanand L Rai’s untitled film in his kitty.
However, it would be interesting to see Salman and SRK exploring newer avenues.
