A lot has been happening in Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL)’s quarters of late. After the launch of the Hyundai Elantra and an update on the arrival of the Tucson, sources now tell us that the Korean carmaker is all set to bolster the safety of its Elite i20 premium hatchback.
The car will soon get six airbags, the announcement for which will be made in the near future. This will be a welcome feature after the previous generation i20 that came with side and curtain airbags, along with all-wheel disc brakes. However, the new feature will be limited to just the top-spec Asta (O) variant.
Hyundai will also be one of the few manufacturers to offer enhanced safety in this segment, after Ford debuted it with the Figo. Elsewhere in the segment, cars usually come with just dual airbags, like the previous-gen Elite i20.
Moreover, the Elite i20 is also set to get an automatic variant in the coming months. As reported earlier, the four-speed torque converter will only be available in the Magna variant of the car. The automatic gearbox, which also does duty under the hood of the Grand i10, will transmit power from the Euro-spec 1.4-litre petrol engine that churns out 100PS of maximum power and 132Nm of peak torque.
This too will be limited to just one variant – surprisingly the Magna, which is a bummer in terms of features. Nonetheless, Hyundai is set to spice things up in this segment with the automatic transmission yet again. Let us know your reactions to these developments in the i20 through the comments section below.
