Nissan has started the production of its new compact SUV – the Kicks – in Mexico. Nissan’s Aguascalientes manufacturing unit in Mexico is the first plant in the world to produce the new crossover. The Kicks made its debut as a concept at the 2014 São Paulo International Motor Show and the production-spec model was revealed in May this year, soon after its Instagram debut.
The Kicks ‘a global vehicle’ will be available in more than 80 countries and we are hopeful that Nissan will introduce it in India as well, since the car shares its ‘V’ platform with the current-generation Micra and the Sunny. The Micra is one of the most exported cars from India and this platform has been localised at Renault-Nissan alliance’s plant in Oragadam near Chennai. The platform is also shared by Renault’s Pulse and Scala offerings along with Datsun’s GO and GO+ models.
Since the Aguascalientes unit is the first plant in the world to manufacture the Kicks, it will also guide the rest of the places where Nissan plans to manufacture the compact SUV. If the company plans to introduce it in India, the Kicks will lock horns with the highest-selling vehicle in the compact SUV segment – the Hyundai Creta – along with others. However, there is no official word from the Japanese automaker regarding the Kicks' launch in India and its positioning since the Terrano is also present in a similar price point. Stay tuned.
