Chennai, May 28: Tamil Nadu would give away Rs.324.32 crore to compensate farmers who incurred losses due to severe drought. In a statement here today, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said the quantum of compensation would be Rs 2,500 per hectare to agriculturists who had lost more than 50 per cent of their crops during the 'Thaladi' and 'Kuruvai' season while for dry crops, the compensation would be rs.1,000.
For farmers who had lost permanent crops like coconut and mango, the compensation would be Rs.4000 per hectare. Mulberry cultivators would get a compensation of Rs.1,500 per hectare, she said.
For farmers who could not raise any crop, Rs.1,250 would be paid in case the land was covered under irrigation system and Rs.500 for dry crops per hectare, she said.
Farmers would get benefit subject to maximum of two hectares, she said, adding the compensation package would benefit 46.96 lakh farmers.
Compensation would be given within the next few weeks through the primary agricultural co-operatives.
