London: Puffball skirts– otherwise known as “bubble skirts” – have been named in a poll as the biggest fashion faux pas of all time.
The garments became popular at proms and cocktail parties in the 1950s and were worn by the likes of pop stars Pepsi and Shirlie in the Eighties.
White socks worn with smart shoes came second on the list of the 20 worst sartorial blunders, followed by socks worn with sandals.
The poll of 2,000 adults was conducted by The Mailbox mall in Birmingham.
“What is and isn’t fashionable is always going to be debatable as it’s largely down to personal choice,” the Daily express quoted Tarah Hewitt, marketing manager at The Mailbox mall, as saying.
“But the top 20 list of fashion mistakes highlights some of the more disastrous errors people have made with their wardrobes over the last few decades.
“There are some items, such as ponchos and cowboy boots, which should never have made it on to the catwalks, let alone into the nation’s wardrobes,” he stated.
The poll was conducted ahead of Style Birmingham Live, a catwalk show at the shopping mall on Saturday.
Tracksuits of any kind, but in particular velour, came fourth on the disaster list closely followed by high-heeled jelly shoes.
Those polled also admitted at least five per cent of their wardrobe consists of fashion mistakes.
But almost one in five people said they were keeping their older items just in case they come back into fashion.
Other mistakes people make include having dirty shoes, wearing baggy or wrinkled clothes and overstuffing pockets with keys and wallets.
