Mumbai: Contrary to popular belief, Akshay Kumar has not bought the rights of superhit song and current youth anthem ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’.
News had it that the Khiladi star had beaten superstar Shah Rukh Khan and had acquired the rights of the song which has been sung by Tamil star Dhanush. It was reported that Akshay would be remaking the song in Hindi.
Speaking to DNA, a source close to Akshay said, “The song is not being remade in Hindi. The song has been heard in its original version by everybody across the globe, and therefore is not an economically viable option as a Hindi remake. Nobody will listen to it.”
The source adds that Akshay and his partner have bought the rights of another South song which is in Telugu. “He wants to use that Telugu song in his movie with Hindi lyrics, and has acquired the rights for it. I must also add there was no one else in contention for the song,” informed the source.
While speculations are rife that who will be singing the Hindi version of the Tanglish song, sources in the industry claim that the producers of ‘3’ have not sold the rights to anyone. “The song is done and there are so many unofficial remixed versions already available on the net. Moreover, nobody wants to sell the rights of the song because the song is already earning money (from downloads etc). However, business deals cannot be predicted and the statusmight change anytime in the future,” said one source.
While the song has become the chartbuster, it has also garnered interest for the film ‘3’ of which it is part of. Everyone is now eager to see the song’s picturisation in the film which is slated to release in 2012.
