New Delhi: BlackBerry launched its much awaited Android-based device Priv on Friday.

BlackBerry Limited said on Friday that its first-ever BlackBerry smartphone powered by Android is now commercially available from carriers in North America.

PRIV will be available in AT&T retail stores in the U.S. and online.

The Android can also now be purchased through BlackBerry’s carrier partners in Canada: Bell, Rogers, SaskTel, TELUS, and WIND.

Consumers can also continue to place PRIV orders through ShopBlackBerry.com.

The company said that combining the best of BlackBerry’s productivity, security and privacy features with the wide world of Google Play store apps, PRIV is the epitome of form and function.

“I have said many times that BlackBerry would not release an Android smartphone unless we could make it private and secure. I’m pleased to say that day has arrived,” said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry.

“With BlackBerry’s patented keyboard and the full complement of applications found in Google Play, this device expands our cross-platform strategy and gives end users the best in security, privacy and productivity, with no compromises on applications", added Chen.

The company said that Priv has been engineered with the world’s finest technology and packaged in an ultra-thin device – including a dual-curved screen, touch and physical keyboards, state-of-the-art 18MP camera, and long-lasting battery – with unique tools that allow users to manage and control their privacy
