New Delhi: Ringing Bells on Wednesday launched India's most affordable smartphone 'Freedom 251' at just Rs 251.

The 3G handset, Freedom 251, features a 4-inch display, Qualcomm 1.3-GHz quad-core processor and 1 GB RAM, according to details shared by the company.

The Android Lollipop-based handset will have an onboard storage of 8 GB with support for expandable memory of up to 32 GB. It features a 3.2-MP rear and a 0.3-MP front facing camera and a 1,450-mAh battery.

The smartphone was unveiled at Nehru Park here by veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

"It is a great news for people like fishermen, farmers and women from rural areas who can use this technology to empower their lives. I hope the smartphone will soon have some apps for the differently-abled too," Joshi told the gathering.

Bookings for the Freedom 251 will start February 18. Previously, the company has launched the most affordable 4G smartphone for Rs 2,999.

According to the company, "Freedom 251" smartphone has been developed "with immense support" from the government.

"`Freedom 251` heralds a new era in the mobile handset and telecom industry from the end consumer perspective in India. Farmers would have access to real time weather forecast and soil conditions which will help them enhance their productivity and income," Ringing Bells president Ashok Chadha said in a statement.

"Women would have easy access to police apps and senior citizens would have access to medical facilities," he added.

The smartphone comes with pre-installed apps like Swachh Bharat, Women Safety, WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter, among others.

Last year, DataWind had announced that it is teaming up with Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications (RCOM) to launch the world's most affordable smartphone, priced at Rs 999. The phone is yet to hit the market.
