Colombo, June 07: Unidentified gunmen killed two
former rebels in eastern Sri Lanka today amid government
allegations that Tamil Tiger rebels were targetting rivals in
violation of a Norwegian-arranged truce.
One man was shot dead in the Trincomalee district today
while another man and his one-year-old daughter were killed in
the adjoining district of Batticaloa, officials said.
The two victims had been members of rebel organisations
which had opposed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE),
officials said.
Nine days ago, the authorities accused the LTTE of trying to kill two soldiers in Trincomalee. The latest attack came a month after the government lodged a strong protest over a series of killings of rival political leaders and former intelligence operatives by Tamil Tiger rebels in violation of the truce.
The protest was conveyed through Norwegian peace facilitators, government spokesman and constitutional affairs minister G.L. Peiris said, adding the authorities would deal with the killers under normal criminal law.
Official figures show that nearly 30 military informants, operatives and Tamil political activists had been gunned down since the Tamil Tigers entered into a Norwegian-brokered truce on February 23 last year.
