Markets close: Sensex ends 363.79 points lower at 31,710.99; Nifty settles down by 88.80 points at 9,827.15.
The market breadth was, however, positive as 27 shares advanced against 24 declining shares on the NSE.

The BSE Sensex plunges by 321.42 points or 1 percent to 31,753.36. The NSE Nifty falls by 77.05 points or 0.78 percent to 9,838.90.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold for delivery in August contract was trading higher by Rs 121 or 0.43 percent at Rs 28,117 per ten grams.
Globally, gold was trading 0.31 percent higher at USD 1,237.88 an ounce in Singapore.
Stocks of ITC suffered the most by falling up to over 15 percent to Rs 276.40 after the GST Council yesterday hiked cess on cigarettes.

The BSE 30-share barometer after dipping to a low of 31,626.44 points at the outset, recovered partially to quote 202.61 points, or 0.63 percent down at 31,872.17.
On similar lines, the NSE Nifty last quoted 44.05 points or 0.44 percent lower at 9,871.90 after making a low and high of 9,792.05 and 9,885.35 in intra-day trade earlier. It had closed at a record high of 9,915.95 points in yesterday's session.
Shares of ITC (down 13.12 percent) emerged as the top loser followed by GAIL (down 1.45 percent), Aurobindo Pharma (down 1.37 percent), RIL (down 0.70 percent) and Tata Power (down 0.12 percent) on NSE.
However, ACC (up 3.16 percent), Bharti Airtel (up 2.71 percent), Wipro (up 1.57 percent), Ambuja Cements (up 1.47 percent) and TCS (up 1.47 percent) were among top gainers.
The NSE Nifty too plunges 75 points or 0.76 percent to 9,840.95 in opening trade.
The BSE benchmark Sensex slumps 300 points or 0.93 percent to 31,775.54 in opening trade.
Taking negative cues from international markets, India's stock indices likely to remain range-bound with negative bias today.
Asian shares stepped back from more than two-year highs today while the dollar sagged on growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will take a more cautious approach to raising interest rates.
Wall Street ended little changed on Monday in low-volume trading, as investors braced for a flood of second-quarter earnings reports later this week. Japan`s Nikkei stock index dipped 0.4 percent in early deals, as markets resumed trading after a public holiday on Monday and caught up to a stronger yen.
