To a question on steps taken by the government to identify the number of non-functional companies which continue to be on the records of the government, Jaitley said: "The ministry had from time to time come out with Easy Exit Schemes to enable such companies which are not carrying on business or in operation, to apply for and get their names removed from the register."
He added that as many as 2,49,263 companies have been included in the list of "strike off" companies - those which have not been carrying on business or are not in operation.
