Art should be taught seriously in schools: Sanjana Kapoor

Sanjana, who single-handedly revived the Prithvi Theatre, says any from of art should be taught more seriously in schools.

New Delhi: Noted theatre personality Sanjana Kapoor, who single-handedly revived the famous Prithvi Theatre in Mumbai, says any from of art should be taught more seriously in schools.
Sanjana, daughter of veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor, said that arts, be it visual, literary or performing, should be inculcated in the school curricullum and not be considered as a mere hobby. "Arts should be taught seriously in schools. It should be treated more than just a hobby. It should not be made as a free period. Art has bigger significance. It helps mould the personality," Kapoor said at a discussion on transition in creative art at the Seventh Mindmine Summit here today. The actress has also expanded the Prithvi theatre into a broader cultural hub by bringing other disciplines like poetry, science, documentaries and short films into the ongoing calender. "I wonder why there are no other Prithvi theatres? We need such institutions to nurture talent. There are young people who are talented and look forward to a career in creative arts. "We need to create nurturing, accessible platforms. An artiste has to find the way of communicating. I feel that things are looking up and we are in a very interesting phase," she said. In her time at the theatre, Kapoor has regularly curated exciting theatre calender, challenged Mumbai theatre groups with festivals demanding new work, toured festivals. Most recently she initiated the Indian Theatre Forum, an all India network of theatre practitioners. PTI
