Modi government provided corruption-free regime: Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi: No government has achieved what the Modi-regime has accomplished in the first two years of coming to power with regard to growth, lower inflation and a corruption-free environment, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

"I would say unhesitatingly that no government could have done as much as we have done in the two years. And this is not just stating it, I have enough examples, reasons and instances to tell why I stated this with so much confidence," she told PTI in an interview.

Despite a depressed world economy and shrinking exports, India has been able to achieve 7.5 percent GDP growth, she said.

Barring pulses, prices of all commodities have been under control and both CPI and WPI are almost in the negative, the minister said.

"Prices are completely under control. Irrespective of what you say, the manufacturing sector is performing in India...I am satisfied."

"I should underline the fact that two years of corruption- free government is running. Watchful eyes are on us," Sitharaman said.

Further talking about improving ease of doing business in the country to boost manufacturing, the minister said the government is making sure that setting up business, particularly manufacturing in India is made easy.

"We are cutting down all those compliance requirements. We are believing in self certification. We are also making sure that if there is a one pager which can substitute all those tonnes of papers, you have to put in, we will do that one paper and even that one paper will be online," she said.

Improvement in ease of doing business is generating a lot of interest among manufacturers, Sitharaman said.

"...As much as we are trying to make it easy for people to set up business, we are also making it easy for them to get out. The Bankruptcy Code is in Parliament, it is an indicator that we want to make it through the law possible for people to know what they should do to get out of a business," she added.

According to a World Bank report, India's ranking in terms of ease of doing business has improved to 130th from 134th out of 189 economies. The government is targeting to bring the ranking within top 50.
