Drake claims he owns rights to word ‘YOLO’

Melbourne: Rapper Drake has reportedly claimed that “YOLO”, an acronym which stands for “You Only Live Once”, was created by him and it is totally his legal property.

But News.com.au has reported that there are more than 100 trademark applications for the term in the United States. And there is no evidence to suggest Drake owns the trademark for YOLO. The word is said to have replaced “totes”, “ohemgee” and “whatevs” in the vocabulary of thousands of Australian teenagers. The R ‘n’ B artist has gone as far as threatening two major US stores, which carry merchandise with the YOLO label on social media. According to the Daily Mail, the rapper first jumped on the YOLO bandwagon in October 2011 when he tweeted: “YOLO... You Only Live Once”, with an image of him looking over a city. Two months later, Zac Efron got YOLO tattooed on his forearm in December 2011. YOLO was beat out by the word “GIF” as the Oxford American Dictionary’s 2012 Word of the Year. ANI
