New Delhi: On the eve of his 67th birthday, Bollywood director-producer Subhash Ghai says he still feels like a 31-year-old at heart.
Ghai, who is known as the showman of Hindi Cinema, for making epic films like ‘Khalnayak’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Karma’ and many others, has not tasted success with his last few films but he says his journey as a filmmaker is still on.
"I am turning 67, but I don`t feel that old. It is just my calendar age. In my heart and mind, I am still a 30-year-old. I am still growning and learning," Ghai told reporters.
Born on January 24, 1945 in Nagpur, Ghai started his career in Hindi cinema as an actor with small roles films like ‘Taqdeer’, ‘Aradhana’ and ‘Umang’, which did not do well at the Box Office.
Ghai began his second innings as a director with debut film ‘Kalicharan’ in 1976 which he obtained through a recommendation by Shatrughan Sinha.
‘Kalicharan’ was one of the biggest hits of its time.
In 1982, he started Mukta Arts Private Limited which, in 2000, became a public company, with Ghai as its chairman and managing director.
His last few films, which include Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Yuvvraaj’ and Anil Kapoor starrer ‘Black & White’ failed to create any magic at the box office and Ghai is aware of what went wrong.
"I feel bad when my films don`t do well. I feel that when a filmmaker goes beyond the obvious and makes a film on a different subject than what the audience likes, people dismiss it," he said.
"I admit that making films like ‘Kisna’ and ‘Yuvvraaj’ for today`s audience was a mistake. But that does not mean that the films were not good. I think they were beautiful. There is a difference between good films and successful films. Some films are exceptions, which are good and do great business as well.”
"I am a simple man and I make films with my heart and mind. Before making a film, I make sure I am fully prepared for it. It requires a lot of hard work and when the film does not work, it grieves me," he added.
This year will see many new films from Ghai`s production company. He is all set to direct a big budget multi-starrer, the formal announcement of it will be made soon.
"Two films from my production house will go on floors on April and two in October. I am also directing one big budget, multi-starrer this year," Ghai said.
When asked about the new breed of actors, Ghai said, "I am impressed by many new actors thses days and one of them is Ranbir Kapoor. I will definitely apprach these new actors the moment I have a suitable script for them."
