London: Keith Urban’s country music superstar lifestyle was marred with drugs and cocaine addiction, until he met Nicole Kidman seven years ago.
Despite hitting the bottle and risked drinking himself to death, he got the chance to start playing a different tune after meeting the Hollywood star.
“I wouldn’t say it was a life-changing moment because it was more than that,” a leading daily has quoted him as saying.
“It was when my life started. That’s the only way I can describe it. Meeting Nic was that profound for me.
“Before then I didn’t really know what I was doing. Now I know exactly what I’m doing and it all makes sense. I feel very, very fortunate that I’ve met somebody like Nic and we share the same kind of ideology,” he said.
New Zealand-born Urban, who has had 14 No.1s on the US Country charts, met the Oscar-winning actress at a party in 2005.
They secretly dated for several months and eventually wed in June 2006.
But four months later, the singer shocked friends, family and fans by checking in to the Betty Ford clinic in California for 90 days of rehab for alcohol abuse. Kidman, 45, who was filming in Rome, was equally shocked and flew home to support him through his difficult recovery.
Urban, a multi-Grammy winner and now a judge on ‘American Idol,’ said that her selfessness saved his life and helped them build a rock-solid marriage.
“We know every part of our relationship because we’ve built it. Just the two of us. It’s beautiful,” he said.
“Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do.
“To see that kind of love in action is very moving and deeply inspiring, and just makes me want to be a better man,” he added.
