New Delhi: It was a teary farewell to noted cartoonist Mario Miranda in Goa. Even though he was a Catholic, Mario was cremated and not buried as per Christian tradition.
The veteran cartoonist had expressed his wish to his wife that he should be cremated and not buried after his death, sources said.
The funeral mass, attended by several artistes and politicians from Goa, was held at the Saviour of the World Church in Loutolim, Miranda`s ancestral village.
After mass, Mario’s body was taken to Hindu Mathgram crematorium, near Margao and consigned to the flames as per his wishes.
Miranda`s immediate family, designer Wendell Rodricks, Fado singer Sonia Sirsat, several local politicians and hundreds of well-wishers joined the funeral and cremation proceedings.
Digambar Kamat, the CM of Goa who was present during the funeral procession said although the artist is no more, Mario Miranda`s work was immortal.
"Whenever I want to see what Goa was earlier, I look up Mario Miranda`s works," Kamat said, adding that Goa had lost one of its foremost sons.
