Tom Cruise turns 50 with personal life in turmoil

Los Angeles: Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise celebrated his 50th birthday sans family just days after wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce plans.

The ‘Mission Impossible’ star had planned to celebrate his milestone birthday in Iceland Tuesday with his wife of five years by enjoying the country`s outdoor wonders, reported People magazine. "Iceland is beautiful. We like hiking, and so we`ll have some nice hikes and maybe go camping," Cruise had said several weeks ago. But everything changed last week when Holmes, 33, caught Cruise by surprise and filed for divorce in New York, then moved out of their apartment, taking daughter Suri, six, with her. Instead, Cruise has been solo in Iceland, where he`s filming the sci-fi flick ‘Oblivion’, while his lawyers in the US weigh how ? and where ? to respond to Holmes`s divorce papers. The actor could file his own papers in New York, as Holmes did, or in Los Angeles, and the stakes are high, primarily in regard to custody. Holmes is already reportedly seeking sole legal custody of their daughter, and all eyes will be on how Cruise will answer. PTI
