Lucknow, June 25: An eight member team of the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) arrived here today and has begun investigation into the much-hyped Madhumita murder case. On their arrival, CB-CID handed over documents relating to the case to the team. CBI members also held discussions with the officials of the CB-CID, who had earlier been handling the case.
CB-CID had been in-charge of the probe for about a month. However, CB-CID faced huge roadblocks in handling the case. Not only were they at the receiving end of chief minister Mayawati, a PIL in the Lucknow court had also directed the government to hand over the case to the CBI.
There were rumours that the CB-CID would not be able to conduct an impartial investigation, as the prime suspect, Amar Mani Tripathi, was a member of the UP cabinet.
CBI is likely to scrutinise the role of Tripathi and his wife Madhumani in the murder. Tripathi was allegedly having a relationship with slain poetess and it is believed that her pregnancy got a little too hot to handle for the minister.
Madhumita was shot dead by two assailants at her Paper Mill Colony residence on May 09. Bureau Report
