Mumbai: Saif Ali Khan must be a relieved man now, for his song ‘Pyaar ki pungi’ has been cleared off plagiarism charges.
Iranian band Barobax Corp had slapped a legal notice against music composer Pritam and the makers of ‘Agent Vinod’ for allegedly copying their number ‘Soosan Khanoom’. The song in question was registered under the Copyright Act in Canada in 2010.
They had also approached the Bombay High Court to seek a stay on Saif’s film, but the case was dismissed.
Producer Dinesh Vijan, while talking to a daily said, “They were talking about copyright violation, but their own papers were not in order. And there was little similarity between the tracks as alleged.”
However, when quizzed if all this was just a publicity stunt, a politically correct Vijan said, “All I can say is that the song has been on air for three weeks and it is the no. 1 track across charts. If there was a reason to believe it was a copy, then why did the matter come up only on the weekend before the film’s release? Anyway, all that is history now. Sriram (director Sriram Raghavan) and I watched the morning show in the theatres with the audience and we were encouraged to see that they were getting the nuances. The buzz was positive.”
Though ‘Agent Vinod’ had received mixed response, we are sure that Saif Ali Khan must be a happy man, for the jinxed period seems to have come to end for him!
