`Evil Dead` remake tops weekend box office with $26m earnings

New York: The demonic horror remake `Evil Dead` has debuted at No. 1 position at the box office with 26 million dollars, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Released by Sony`s TriStar Pictures and shot on a modest budget of 17 milion dollars, the remake added 4.5 million dollars in 21 overseas markets, giving it a worldwide start of 30.5 million dollars, the New York Post reported. The remake has been produced by the 1983 original`s filmmakers, director Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert, and its star, Bruce Campbell. In a tight fight for second-place were two holdovers, the animated comedy `The Croods` and the action flick `G.I. Joe: Retaliation,` both with an estimated earnings of 21.1 million dollars. Steven Spielberg`s 3-D debut of "Jurassic Park" came in fourth with 18.2 million dollars. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com.
