New York: The demonic horror remake `Evil Dead` has debuted at No. 1 position at the box office with 26 million dollars, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
Released by Sony`s TriStar Pictures and shot on a modest budget of 17 milion dollars, the remake added 4.5 million dollars in 21 overseas markets, giving it a worldwide start of 30.5 million dollars, the New York Post reported.
The remake has been produced by the 1983 original`s filmmakers, director Sam Raimi and producer Rob Tapert, and its star, Bruce Campbell.
In a tight fight for second-place were two holdovers, the animated comedy `The Croods` and the action flick `G.I. Joe: Retaliation,` both with an estimated earnings of 21.1 million dollars.
Steven Spielberg`s 3-D debut of "Jurassic Park" came in fourth with 18.2 million dollars.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
