Trump impact on Indian IT sector: Companies cut down recruitment from B-schools

New Delhi: Indian IT sector is already quaking with fear at potential changes to the US immigration norms with the largest recruiters at B-schools cutting down their hiring.

As per The Economic Times report, IT recruitment has slumped 20-40 percent in several tier-II — and even some tier-I — management schools this season. At Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, IT hiring fell 26 per cent; at Great Lakes Institute of Management (GLIM), Chennai, it dropped 30 percent; and at Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, it's down 30-40 percent.

"We are expecting at least 30 per cent less hiring in IT as compared with last year," the report quoted Saveeta Mohanty, associate dean for career advisory services at Xavier Institute of Managemen t, Bhubaneswar (XIMB).

Infosys, Wipro, Dell, Cognizant, Accenture, Tata Consultancy, IBM and many others are expected to slow down in their hiring from B-schools.

Since the launch of his launch of his campaign for US President, Donald Trump has projected protectionist stance and spoken of tightened visa norms to immigrant workforce.

At his inaugural speech, he said: "Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength... We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American."

Last season, six of the top 10 recruiters by numbers across 26 B-schools were from the technology space, according to the ET Top Recruiters 2016 survey.
