Australia vs Pakistan, 1st Test: Skipper Steve Smith dominates day 1; Mohammad Amir faces injury concerns

New Delhi: Skipper Steve Smith dominated day 1 of the pink-ball first Test match between Australia and Pakistan in Brisbane on Thursday.

Smith, 27, hit a classy unbeaten 110 off 192 balls as the hosts scored 288/3 at the close of day 1. The skipper was in company of rookie Peter Handscomb, who was unbeaten on 64 of 150 balls.

Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Matt Renshaw and David Warner produced a 70-run opening stand inside the 23rd over, the the veteran left-handed batsman was trapped LBW by Mohammad Amir.

Pakistan seemed to have gained an upper hand when Islamabad-born Usman Khawaja was removed in the following over by Yasir Shah. But Khawaja's departure brought in Smith.

Renshaw departed after making strokeful 71 off 125 balls, which included nine fours. He fell to Wahab Riaz, caught behind, in the 44th over.

It was the last success the visitors enjoyed on the day 1. Smith and Handscomb produced an unbeaten stand of 137, even as Pakistan's star bowler Amir picked up an injury towards the end of day's play.

Amir was carried off the field after his leg dug into the turf as the ball ran on to the boundary rope.

He however returned soon enough, but his fitness will be closely monitored by Pakistan team.

For the hosts, Smith scored his 16th Test hundred, eight of those coming while leading the team.
