Australian opener Nic Maddinson is expected to be sidelined for atleast four to six weeks of cricketing action after breaking his arm following a ferocious bouncer bowled by pace-bowler Jhye Richardson during a JLT Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and Western Australia on Sunday.

The 26-year-old was batting on 10 off 20 deliveries, in the second innings of the clash at MCG. That is when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Richardson hit the opener's right forearm with a short, fast and venomous delivery which left the batsman in no position to evade the blow.

Maddinson reacted immediately after being hit, recoiling in distress as the medical staff performed a series of Tests on his arm. Richardson was amongst the players who expressed genuine concern about the cricketer's well-being as he received medical attention.

An update from Cricket Victoria confirmed that Maddinson had suffered a fractured ulna and would miss the start of the Big Bash with his new franchise Melbourne Stars.

"To see him go down when he's batting so well is disappointing," said Victoria spinner Jon Holland.

"He's fitted in the group really well, he works hard, he's a good bloke."

"We didn't know much until the Doc got out there and started pressing his thumb into his arm – it looked pretty painful. He's batting as well as we've ever seen him bat," he added.
