India vs England 3rd Test Day 1 - As it happened

India take on England in the do-or-die third Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on Saturday. England lead the five-Test series 2-0.

Day 1: Stumps

# WICKET!! Pandya sent off at 18 runs. The outswinger ball was misjudged by Pandya and caught by Buttler at second slip. Anderson has been making it hard for Pant and Pandya. 

# Broad trying to push but Pant manages a FOUR towards deep mid-wicket. Pandya too slips a FOUR on the outside edge on Anderson's delivery. India crosses 300 run mark.

# The situation remains firm for India. Anderson is back in his attacking form as he does not allows runs to slip from either Pandya or Pant. Meanwhile, Broad nearly misses Pandya's wicket. The inswinger with an extra bounce hits Pandya's shoulder and is dropped by Jennings who was placed at 3rd slip. 

# Pant and Pandya try to keep a steady situation. Moving with a run rate of 3.64 runs per over, Pant strikes a six on his second ball to lower the building pressure.

Debutant Rishabh Pant is in at number seven.

# Wicket!! Kohli (97) falls 3 short of his second Test century in England. He flashes hard at Adil Rashid's tossed up delivery, hands a catch to Stokes at first-slip.

# Rahane missed out on a scintillating century but India continue to score a healthy run-rate. It needs to be seen if Virat Kohli, who was on par with Rahane, gets to his second Test century in England. The hosts are trying all sorts of things but are leaking runs in the process and India are on course to top them on Day 1.  

Hardik Pandya is in at number six. 

# Wicket!!! Stuart Broad swings the ball away, Rahane pushes at it and edges the ball to Alastair Cook, who takes a sharp catch at first-slip. A brilliant innings comes to an end. Rahane departs for 81 (131).  India 241/4. Click here for the detailed scorecard. 

# India 236/3 after 66 overs. 

# Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have batted brilliantly and responsibly. They have left the good balls and punished the loose deliveries well. Joe Root is trying all kinds of things, he is rotating his bowlers and has kept an attacking field throughout the past two sessions but India have survived and accelerated comfortably. Kohli and Rahane would look to bat till the end of day's play and make most of the momentum.

# Ajinkya Rahane completes 3000 Test runs ( 81 innings). 

# For the first time in this series, England skipper Joe Root is short on options. The Indian captain and vice-captain outplayed the hosts in the second session post a nervy start. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane both completed their half-centuries and put up an intimidating century stand. India with 189 ( for the loss of 3 wickets) are in a comfortable position but it needs to be seen if both the batsmen can convert their good starts to three figures? # Half-century!! The vice-captain joins the party. Rahane jumps on to Woakes' short ball and smashes it towards the point boundary. He brings up 13th Test half-century. 

# Half-century! Skipper Kohli brings up his 18th half-century in England. He is also the leading run-scorer in the series. 

#  Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have settled down well. They have batted out the pacers' spell as Joe Root put leg-spinner Adil Rashid into the attack but he has leaked plenty of runs so far. #  Chris Woakes is bowling brilliantly. He is swinging it both ways at a good pace and he is moving the ball in the air. His occasional inswingers could trouble the Indian batsmen, especially skipper Kohli, who tends to walk across his off-stump and nudge inswingers over the leg-side. India 114/3 after 36 overs.

# India have lost three crucial wickets but the visitors are in a good position with decent amount of numbers on the board. They need partnerships at the moment and they have their best batsman, in the current tour, on the crease. But a wicket or two could shift the momentum towards England. That's the beauty of white-ball cricket.

# Wicket!! Cheteshwar Pujara cuts Chris Woakes' short delivery and hits it straight into the hands of Adil Rashid. Pujara departs for 14 (31). 

# Virat Kohli is in at number four. 

# Wicket!!  Chris Woakes strikes again. Swings the ball in to trap KL Rahul on front. The batsman opts for a review, but the impact is on line and the wickets are hitting. KL Rahul departs for 23 (53). India 65/2 after 21 overs. 

# Shikhar Dhawan was looking dangerous in the middle. He had adjusted his technique really well but a late swinger by Chris Woakes saw him nudge a comfortable catch to Jos Buttler at slip. The left-hander scored 35 runs off 65 balls at a healthy strike rate of 53.83. India are off to a steady start after a decent 60-run partnership for the opening wicket between Dhawan and Rahul. 

# Cheteshwar Pujara is in at number three. 

# Wicket!! Chris Woakes makes the first breakthrough, Shikhar drops his shoulders, pushes at the pitched up delivery and edges the ball to Jos Buttler at second-slip. That's the end of Dhawan's resilient innings. India 60/1. 

# The ball is moving around a little but there is not much pace off the wicket. The ball tends to slow down after pitching. Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul have looked good so far. They seem to have made some adjustments in their approach. They allow the ball to come on to the bat and are playing late to avoid edges. Decent start this for India, considering the opening wicket partnerships in recent matches on the England tour. India 41/0 after 13 overs.

# There is a bit of grass on the wicket, which might help the bowlers initially. India's openers, on the other hand, will look to survive the probing first 10 overs and build a small partnership early in the innings. Testing times for both Shikhar Dhawan, who replaced Murali Vijay, and KL Rahul. James Anderson, who bowled exceptionally in the first two Test matches, will look to continue his good form and put India on the back foot early. Expect a cracker of a match.

India were outclassed in the first two Tests of the five-match series. 

Chris Woakes and James Anderson starred for England as they beat India by an innings and 159 runs in the second Test at Lord’s.  In the first Test at Edgbaston England held their nerves to come back into the first Test match and beat India by 31 runs. Sam Curran's gutsy 65-ball 63 runs, at a stage when England were reeling at 87/7, proved to be the difference between the two sides.
