India held their nerve towards the end to beat Australia by 31 runs on the fifth day of the opening Test at the Adelaide Oval on Monday and take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing four-match series.

Resuming on Sunday's score of 104 for four in their chase of 323 runs, Australia were bowled out for 291 runs in their second innings despite a strong fight back by Shaun Marsh (60) and skipper Tim Paine (41).

Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers for his brilliant figures of three for 65, followed by Jasprit Bumrah's three for 68. Ashwin also contributed with three wickets conceding 92 runs, while Ishant Sharma chipped in with a wicket.

The match was all the more memorable as there are a few records which were broken. These are as follows:

1) India win their first Test match in Australia in 10 years

The Virat Kohli-led side ended India's 10-year-long wait for a Test win Down Under as the Asian giants last won in Australia under Anil Kumble at Perth in 2008.Meanwhile, the victory also saw India clinch the opening Test of a series in Australia for the very first time. The tourists also became the first team to win a Test match in Australia, England and South Africa in the same calendar year.

2) Virat Kohli achieves personal milestone

Kohli became the fastest Indian batsman to score 1,000 Test runs in Australia during his 18th innings in the opening match. He surpassed prolific batsman VVS Laxman, who previously held the record, having achieved the landmark in 19 innings. The Indian skipper also reached the tally faster than legendary batsmen Don Bradman (19 innings) and Sachin Tendulkar (22 innings). Not only this, India's win in Adelaide was Kohli's 25th Test victory (15 at home and 10 away) as a skipper. He now requires just two more away wins to become the most successful Indian skipper overseas.

3) Mohammed Shami picks most Test wicket for India in 2018

Shami, the right-arm fast-medium swing and seam bowler, has notched up a total of five wickets in the opening Test against Australia to become the highest Test wicket taker for India this year.

4) Rishabh Pant equals world record for most catches in a Test

Wicketkeeper-batsman Pant took a total of six catches in the first innings of the Adelaide Test before bagging another five in the second innings to take his tally to 11 and equal world record held by Jack Russell and AB de Villiers. He also broke the record of the most number of catches by an Indian wicketkeeper in a Test match, surpassing Wriddhiman Saha (10 catches).

5) Cheteshwar Pujara equals Sourav Ganguly's tally of 16 Test tons

Top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara struck a knock of 123 runs in the first innings of the match to equal former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly's record of 16 Test centuries.En route to the feat, he also reached the 5,000-run mark in the longest format of the game to become only the 12th Indian to do so. Pujara, who also smashed 71 runs in the second innings and declared Man of the Match, now requires 150 more runs surpass legendary cricketer Kapil Dev (5,248 runs).

The two sides will now lock horns in the second Test of the series from December 14 at Perth Stadium. (Also Read: Pujara, bowlers help India clinch first Test win in Australia in 10 years)
